Recruiting Diary 2012: Ashton Shumpert, Sept. 27: Georgia visit

Itawamba AHS 4-star back Ashton Shumpert plans to take his official visit to Georgia Saturday as the No. 5 Bulldogs take on Tennessee.

Georgia is one of 10 offers on the table for the senior. Another Bulldog coach is keeping tabs too.

“I talked to Coach Mullen (Wednesday) night. He called to talk to me about the game last week,” Shumpert said.

The Mississippi State coach wasn’t talking about Mississippi State’s game against South Alabama. He was referring to Shumpert’s game against Okolona. Mullen watched Shumpert in person for the first time.

“I tried not to think about it but it was in the back of my head though,” Shumpert said. “He said our fans were happy to see him They just forgot about the game.”

Ole Miss kept close contact too. Rebels coach Hugh Freeze, running backs coach Derrick Nix and co-offensive coordinator Matt Luke have also been in recent contact with the recruit.

Like a lot of recruits, Shumpert enjoys the positive attitude Freeze has carried to Oxford.

“When you talk to him, you know what you’re going to get,” he said.

Shumpert made his debut two weeks ago and has racked up 354 yards on 30 carries and five touchdowns. He also has 12 tackles and an interception.

“The first two games I was trying to get used to game speed again and getting used to contact,” Shumpert said.
