Recruiting Diary 2012: Ashton Shumpert, Oct. 18 Shumpert named Mississippi All-Star

Itawamba AHS 4-star running back Ashton Shumpert was one of 40 players named Wednesday to the 2012 Mississippi roster for the Alabama-Mississipppi All-Star Classic.

Shumpert and Mississippi will be trying to break a four-game losing streak in the Dec. 15 game in Montgomery.

“First of all, I’m looking forward to winning it for the state of Mississippi,” Shumpert said. “I’m looking forward to playing with some of the best players in Mississippi and against some of the best in Alabama.”

Shumpert, who has 10 scholarship offers, took in Mississippi State’s win over Tennessee last Saturday.

“The offense really jumped out,” Shumpert said. “They looked really balanced and the defense played pretty good too against Tennessee’s pass game.”

Shumpert talked with Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze and Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen this week. He lists his offers as Georgia, Purdue, Alabama, Alcorn State, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma State, Southern Miss, Memphis, Mississippi State and Ole Miss.

Georgia and Vanderbilt are high on the list of official visits he wants to take before the season ends.

Shumpert said Freeze and Mullen talked with him this week about Itawamba’s game at Amory, the deciding game for the Division 1-4A championship.

“I expect it to be a big atmosphere. There are some big-time players,” Shumpert said. “It could be a lot of points put up or it could be low scoring. You really don’t know what to expect.”
