Talked with Ripley coach Chad Cook today after a fun game of phone tag Sunday. His Tigers go to 3A champ Charleston Friday.
“The first thing that stands out is they’re so athletic. No. 6, he’s one of the better football players I’ve seen. No. 8, No. 4 and No. 2… The quarterback has been out. I haven’t seen him. They’re just athletic. They say the road to Jackson runs through Charleston because they won it last year. Tony (Vance) does a great job with them. I wouldn’t have it any other way. We’re going to give them everything we’ve got. That’s all we can ask.”
No player on Ripley’s roster had won a playoff game before last week against Velma Jackson.
“It’s a new situation. I’m proud of the way my kids rebounded this year and we’re going down there with one mindset, win the football game. They’re really talented. We’ve got to make sure we handle ours. We’re not worried about the trip or second-round environment.”
On 71-point output Friday…
“We finally started clicking. I remember days we practiced like on a Thursday we wouldn’t even have a defense and wouldn’t complete balls. It’s a credit to all those kids on offense. We’ve had 12 different kids score touchdowns. It’s been fun to watch.”
