Vanderbilt and Ole Miss are battling for bowl eligibility Saturday. They’re also battling to get Ashton Shumpert.
Itawamba AHS’ 4-star running back heard from Vanderbilt coaches Wednesday night and Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze checked in Tuesday.
Shumpert also lists offers from Georgia, Mississippi State, Purdue, Alabama, Alcorn State, Oklahoma State, Southern Miss and Memphis.
For the first time, Shumpert said Thursday he’s getting closer to narrowing his list of 10 offers to a top five.
He plans to be in Oxford for the 6 p.m. kick Saturday.
So will newly de-committed prospect Robert Nkemdiche, the nation’s top recruit from Loganville, Ga.
Shumpert said Nkemdiche’s path won’t necessarily affect his but he can see how it could play a role for fellow recruits.
“That probably would get some more defensive commits,” Shumpert said.
Nkemdiche’s mother Beverly hasn’t publicly pushed her son in any particular direction but has been vocal about wanting him to go to Ole Miss to join his brother, rising linebacker Denzel.
Shumpert says his family all tells him the same thing.
“All of them tell me the same thing, to go where I feel comfortable and feel I’ll be the most successful,” Shumpert said.
