This is the first full week of basketball in 2013.
What does Northeast Mississippi have to look forward to in the next few weeks of regular season play prior to the playoffs beginning.
I did this for football, and I thought I would try it for these few weeks of basketball – 18 Wheeler’s – 18 games that could be on your radar for the remainder of the 2013 season.
I probably should have knocked this out yesterday/Monday, but I stayed home and watched the Alabama-Notre Dame game. You should have my schedule.
But anyway, here goes starting with tonight/Tuesday: Mooreville at Booneville boys – great matchup of 3A teams from different divisions that have eyes on making a run through the playoffs.
Friday Jan 11: Blue Mountain at Biggersville boys: A rematch from earlier in season which Biggersville won. Blue Mountain fresh off Tippah County title over Ripley.
Pontotoc at Itawamba AHS girls: Potential the two best teams in Division 1-4A. Pontotoc is of course the defending 4A state champion; and IAHS saw a starter suffer a broken leg versus New Site last week. These two will play again Jan. 29.
Saturday Jan 12: The Monroe County Tournament boys finals, I’m betting between Aberdeen and Amory. These two play a regular season game Feb. 2.
Jan 15: Columbus at Tupelo girls, a rematch of a 50-49 Columbus victory at the beginning of the month in 2-6A. Keep you eye on the Lady Wave, four sophomores in their top seven rotation.
Jan. 19: The Prentiss County Tournament boys final, I’m betting it’s current undefeated Baldwyn versus Booneville. Enough said. These two have a regular season matchup also Feb. 8.
Jan. 22: Alcorn Central at Ripley boys: 1-3A shaping up as one of the better boys races with more than two teams. Everyone being healthy, this might be for second place.
Booneville at Blue Mountain boys: At Blue Mountain anything can happen, just hope the gym survives Kenny Paul Geno.
Jan. 25: Ripley at Booneville boys: Which before we got past Christmas, I was betting this was for first place in 1-3A, before Alcorn Central inserted itself in the race.
Corinth at Baldwyn boys: Another test for Baldwyn if still undefeated. If this is not a test for them, wait until the next night.
Jan 26: The Hot Bed Classic at New Albany which to me features a pair of games.
Booneville versus Piney Woods: Piney Woods beat Tupelo in this two years ago, and Baldwyn sucked it up and beat them last season.
Tupelo vs. Baldwyn: Great local matchup for this tournament, which consistently produces.
Jan. 29: Belmont at Ripley girls: Defending 3A champ Belmont against perhaps this year’s division favorite Ripley in 1-3A. Great stuff.
Corinth at Shannon boys: Corinth already has a win over Shannon. Amory, Shannon, and Corinth might be the class of 1-4A this season, so an important game to sort things out.
Feb. 1: Mooreville at Aberdeen: In 2-3A, you only play each other once, so this is probably for all the marbles in the division.
Shannon at Tupelo boys: Great Lee county rivalry, and some classic games with these two. Tupelo beat Shannon earlier in season while sitting three starters.
Well there it is.
Of course this is not all-inclusive for all the potential good matchups that dot Northeast Mississippi, just this poor-man’s opinion.
Basketball in the Hill Country (of course that’s an old Bill Ross term) – you can not beat it.
