David Wheeler on the girls North Tournament

Hey, missed a preview of Monday’s games of the North girls in all the classifications, but there is certainly plenty of basketball left this week.
Perhaps a recap of Monday for our Northeast Mississippi teams, where there any surprises? And also looking forward class by class.
Perhaps starting from the big schools down Monday, Tupelo fell to Clinton 50-40 In Class 6A. With all the sophomores, perhaps the Lady Wave still a season away from serious run.
Still a good season. I will miss quarterback Casey Marshall playing.
Does set up some heavy-hitting matchups among the state’s top schools Friday with Columbus vs. Southaven and Horn Lake vs. Clinton.
In 5A, the Oxford Lady Chargers play tonight at Canton. Perhaps not a smooth season thus far for defending champs, but chance to start fresh.
In 4A, perhaps worth a raised eyebrow is the 65-64 loss by New Albany to Greenwood. Attrition of players finally caught up with the Lady Bulldogs, and the end of a truly fine career by Jasmine Spears.
Good wins Monday by Lafayette and Shannon. Lafayette perhaps peaking at right time, while Lady Raiders have been a personal favorite of mine this season with how hard they play.
This sets up three of the games the rest of the week at Pontotoc, beginning Thursday with hot Lafayette vs. Pontotoc at 4 p.m. Shannon has Greenwood at 5:30 p.m., and the big front line of North Pontotoc versus smooth Itawamba AHS at 7 p.m. Surely, a pair of wonderful area matchups with Pontotoc-Lafayette and North Pontotoc-IAHS.
Be wary of Gentry, which plays Corinth in the 8:30 p.m. game Thursday.
In 3A, the fun the rest of the week will be at Ripley, with the Lady Tigers playing solid Mooreville at 4 p.m., and Byhalia vs. defending 3A champ Belmont at 7 p.m. Ripley appears to be the team from this area on a mission here.
A word to the wise, watch out for Eastside, which plays the 8:30 p.m. game Thursday against Charleston.
In 2A, all roads go through the defending champion New Site Lady Royals. I offer that Ripley and New Site played two of the toughest schedules around the holidays, and it appears the Lady Royals are flicking the switch back on for the playoffs after disappearing into division play.
The Lady Royals play Coahoma County at 4 p.m. Thursday, with a competitive affair at 7 p.m. with Potts Camp-Baldwyn.
The Coahoma County contest might be New Site’s biggest test of the whole week.
And in 1A, just get out of H. W. Byers’ way.
Did you see the score of Monday’s game against Montgomery County, 98-18?
For the record, Falkner-Coldwater at 4 p.m., Vardaman-Ashland at 5:30 p.m., Byers-Pine Grove at 7 p.m., and Coffeeville-Biggersville at 8:30 p.m.
Good luck to all the Northeast Mississippi area girls teams the rest of the week.
